WBMT and Student Council are hosting the Battle of the Bands for the second year in a row. The event will be on Friday, April 4 at 7 pm. Bands from all over will be competing for a coveted prize. The stakes are much higher than last year’s competition.
“The goal is to put on a really good show for the audience,” said WBMT advisor Matthew Chadwick, “and to provide an opportunity for young musicians to compete and play a show and experience what it’s like to be on stage playing live music.”
Any band interested in performing can sign up on the Masconomet website. Just go to the “Athletics and Activities” tab and click on “WBMT” to find the sign up form.
The competition will be held in the auditorium and the prize is much more valuable to a small band like the ones participating. Last year the prize was a plaque commemorating the winner and bragging rights. This time the winning band will be given recording time in a real music studio in Topsfield called Harmony House Studios.
The biggest part of this contest is music. Many are wondering what kind of music is to be expected here.
“You can play any kind of music as long as it is appropriate,” said sophomore Anders Raines. “Personally, I think the bands last year were great.”
The supervisors of this competition are hoping to branch out into different kinds of music than what they have done before.
“We’ve historically had a lot of people making rock music,” said Chadwick. “There’s nothing wrong with that. I would love to see a three-piece jazz band show up or potentially a hip-hop group. I think that would be really cool.”
This event will be hosted by the executive board at WBMT, including Station Manager senior Maya Schildkraut and Music Director senior Anjo Kordis.
“Our goal is to lift up amateur teenage bands for the sake of music and a shared love and passion for playing, listening, and making music,” said music director Anjo Kordis. “as well as to have a friendly competition and show off.”
Many outcomes are being hoped for. Many bands are hoping to win and everyone going is looking forward to a good show.Communications director senior Megan Brady said that WBMT is looking to create publicity for WBMT and the local bands that are participating.
Snacks and drinks will be provided at the school. There will be a variety of options to choose from.
“The proceeds will help the student council and the radio station,” said Raines. This event is still early in its development and it will improve no matter what. An electric show can be expected from any music lover.
