Kyren Lacy was a talented football player from Thibodaux, Louisiana, with a bright future ahead. He played wide receiver for Louisiana State University (LSU). Where, in just a few weeks from now, he was projected to be a 2nd-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Sadly, Lacy passed away at the age of 24 on Saturday night, April 12, 2025. Authorities say it was an apparent suicide during a police chase in Houston, Texas.
Early on in his life, Lacy was a star in the making. Lacy began his football journey in Thibodaux, where he stood out at Thibodaux High School. As a senior, he caught 42 passes for 729 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. His impressive play earned him a spot at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. After two seasons there, he transferred to LSU in 2022.
At LSU, Lacy continued to shine. In 2024, he led the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with nine touchdown catches. He finished that season with 58 receptions for 866 yards. Over his full college career, he played 64 games, made 162 catches, gained 2,360 yards, and scored 26 touchdowns.
Lacy was not just known for catching footballs; he was known for catching people’s hearts and caring for all of those around him.
Off the field, Lacy gave back to his community. In November 2024, he held a Thanksgiving turkey drive in his hometown. He partnered with a local group called “Bless Your Heart” and helped hand out over 100 turkeys to families in need. His kindness and care made a big difference to the people around him.
In December 2024, Lacy was involved in a car accident that took the life of a 78-year-old man. He was charged with negligent homicide and felony hit and run. Lacy turned himself in and was later released on bail. A court hearing was set for April 14, 2025. However, just days before that hearing, Kyren died. Police say he took his own life during a chase in Houston, Texas. He was found dead in his car with a gunshot wound to his chest. His sudden death shocked everyone who knew him or followed his career.
Kyren Lacy will be remembered as more than just a football player. He was a young man full of promise, both on and off the field. His story is one of talent, struggle, kindness, and deep sadness. Many will remember the touchdowns he scored, but even more will remember the heart he showed and the bright future he had ahead of him.
