The Chieftains celebrate after junior Victoria Cerbone’s goal.
Captain John Bertram Athletic Field is where the Chieftains left their mark on the Salem Witches’ previously undefeated record in a 2-0 win on Wednesday.
Salem fielded a strong team in hopes of maintaining their win streak. However, Masco’s girls would prove a worthy opponent. Both teams battled throughout the first 40 minutes, but at halftime’s whistle, a goal had yet to be scored on either end.
At the start of the second half, senior Captain Cate Schaffer sent a perfect through ball to junior striker Victoria Cerbone, who would find the back of the net in a beautiful bottom left corner goal.
With fourteen minutes left in the game, junior midfielder Sophie Nelson took a shot on net from the 18, which Salem’s goalkeeper had saved; however, junior forward Brooke Hagerty capitalized on the rebound and buried the goal to give the Chieftains a 2-0 lead.
In another shutout for junior goalie Evie Mills, while not needing to use her hands much, she was able to contribute by helping distribute the ball with her feet.
Up next for the team is an out-of-conference away game against Division 1 Bishop Feehan on Saturday at two o’clock.
