This fall, Masconomet’s Model United Nations (Model UN) club is making history by hosting its very first in-house beginner conference.
This event will be a student-led introduction for newcomers to the world of diplomacy, public speaking, and international problem-solving.
The conference, organized entirely by the members of the club, reflects a growing enthusiasm among students to bring global awareness and leadership opportunities to their peers.
“We’re very excited to announce that we’ve planned and put together our own mini conference. The coolest part about it is that it’s designed for beginners who have never done Model UN,” said senior club officer Landon Boutilier.
Model UN, often seen as an intimidating activity for first-timers, involves students representing roles such as countries or people in simulated committees, where they debate pressing (or humorous) global issues and collaborate to find solutions. By tailoring the conference to those starting out, the club hopes to lower the stress and encourage more students to give it a try.
“It’s a way for beginners to come together and really learn and begin their MUN journey,” said Boutilier.
The conference will feature simplified topics, guided support, and an encouraging environment to help participants build confidence and skills.
But it’s not just about the newcomers. Senior Belle Dicarlo, another dedicated club officer, emphasized that the event is also a valuable experience for returning members.
“This is a great opportunity for people who are just beginning to start Model UN and learn all the basics, but also for returners to expand their skills and really become the best delegate they possibly can be,” Dicarlo said.
The club is buzzing with energy as the event approaches.
“We are just so excited to come together again this year and really explore other people’s skills with Model UN and also develop them,” she said.
This event required lots of hard work and planning behind the scenes from advisor Laura Greeley and the club officers.
“They met with the team’s advisors, Principal DiNardo, facilities managers, and more to get approval for the event and to work out the logistics. Then they rallied the team, recruiting others to establish committees, write background guides, serve as chairs, and advertise to Masco students and other schools.” Greeley said.
With Masco Model UN club’s passion and initiative on full display, the upcoming conference promises to be more than just a learning experience. It’s a celebration of student leadership, collaboration, and global thinking. Whether you’re new to the world stage or a returning delegate, this event is a unique chance to experience Model UN in action right here at Masco.
