GAME OFFERS A PIH-TASTIC EXPERIENCE

GAME OFFERS A PIH-TASTIC EXPERIENCE

In an indie game market saturated with retro throwbacks and narrative-driven passion projects, Pih stands out amongst other video games by doing something the impossible: creating insanity with as little as possible.

MAKING IT OUT OF THE PIGPEN: DEVELOPMENT
MAKING IT OUT OF THE PIGPEN: DEVELOPMENT

Developed and published by solo creator BecomeANobody, Pih is a physics-driven action game released on Steam on August 4, 2024. On the surface, it appears minimalistic and almost nonsensical–a game about pigs, ham, and survival–but beneath that simplicity lies a surprisingly engaging and creative experience that has earned the game an overwhelmingly positive reception from players.

Pih began as a modest indie project, originally appearing under the working title Big Pig before being renamed. From the start, the developer’s philosophy was clear: skip unnecessary complexity and get players directly into the action. There are no lengthy tutorials, story cutscenes, or exposition dumps. Instead, Pih focuses entirely on gameplay, trusting players to learn through experimentation.

The game’s popularity grew gradually at first, but it saw a major boost in visibility through short gameplay clips circulating on social media. Videos showcasing flying pig ragdolls and frantic combat exploded with viewership, and helped Pih gain traction as a meme title. This organic exposure contributed heavily to its growing player base and positive reputation.

BRINGING HOME THE BACON: GAMEPLAY

At its heart, Pih is built around a simple objective: collect all the food in a level while surviving hostile hogs that attempt to stop you. This straightforward goal allows the game to lean heavily into physics-based interactions. Combat is not overly technical, but it is unpredictable and startling when pigs catch you off guard. Shooting or punching enemies sends them tumbling across the environment, often in exaggerated and hilarious ways.

Each level acts as a contained challenge, encouraging quick thinking, movement, and spatial awareness. Rather than overwhelming players with complex systems, Pih finds depth through variation. Environmental layouts, enemy placement, and hazards evolve as the game progresses, ensuring that later levels feel more demanding despite using the same core mechanics.

SQUEAL DEAL CHALLENGES: DIFFICULTY

Pih features over 60 levels, divided into themed seasons that culminate in boss fights. Each boss encounter acts as a skill check, forcing players to apply what they have learned under more intense conditions. Seasonal content, such as Halloween and Christmas-themed stages, adds visual variety and keeps the experience from feeling repetitive.

Progression is reinforced through achievements, with dozens tied to completing levels, defeating bosses, and overcoming specific challenges. While there is no traditional upgrade system or skill tree, the increasing difficulty provides a natural sense of growth as players become more proficient with the game’s physics and pacing.

The controls in Pih are intentionally responsive and accessible, allowing players to focus on movement and timing rather than button complexity. The game supports keyboard, controller, and even VR play, which is an uncommon but welcomed feature for an indie title of this scale.

Difficulty ramps up gradually. Early levels are forgiving and playful, while later stages require precision and careful positioning. This progression encourages replayability, as players often return to earlier levels to improve their performance or experiment with different approaches.

PIGMENT OF THE IMAGINATION: GRAPHICS

Visually, Pih favors a realistic look. The pigs, ham, and food collectable models are photorealistic, which makes the roughly textured environments jarring in a way that screams “Pih”. The visual identity of this game is unrivaled, far surpassing many triple A titles of recent years.

The sound design complements this game perfectly. Impact sounds, enemy reactions, and background music all enhance the sense of momentum. The sound also reinforces the goofy nature of the experience with voice lines like “You got hammed!” whenever the player perishes.

What truly sets Pih apart is its commitment to absurdity. The pig-centric theme, combined with exaggerated physics, gives the game a distinctive personality. Rather than relying on parody or heavy humor writing, Pih lets its mechanics generate comedy naturally through unexpected outcomes.

The inclusion of seasonal updates and VR support further highlights the developer’s willingness to experiment. These choices give Pih a flexibility and charm that many larger titles lack, furthering its status as a creative indie success rather than a polished but generic product.

THE WHOLE HOG: AUDIENCE RECEPTION
THE WHOLE HOG: AUDIENCE RECEPTION

With an overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam, Pih has clearly resonated with its audience. Players frequently praise its replayability, satisfying physics, and pure fun factor. While it may never reach the scale of a mainstream hit, Pih has secured a lasting place within the indie scene as a game that understands its strengths and fully commits to them.

Pih is not a narrative epic or technical showcase. Instead, it is a focused, energetic experience built around one core idea: pig chaos can be fun. Through simple mechanics, clever level design, and a strong creative identity, Pih transforms a bizarre premise into a genuinely engaging game. For players looking for a fast-paced, physics-driven indie title that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Pih is an experience well worth playing.
