The February 6 NBA trade deadline was full of shocking, blockbuster trades. Teams made big moves that reshaped their futures. Some focused on winning now, while others built their futures.
One of the most surprising trades was Luka Doncic going to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Dallas Mavericks traded their star player in Exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and future draft picks. This trade was out of the blue, as no reports hinted at this blockbuster move. Doncic is one of the best players in the league, who will now team up with 4-time NBA Champion Lebron James, making the Lakers one of the best contenders in the NBA.
Another shocker comes out of the Bay area, where Jimmy Butler was traded from the Miami Heat to the Golden State Warriors. His time in Miami ended with problems, including multiple suspensions and team violations. After joining the Warriors, Butler has been on a roll and picked up right where he left off averaging 20 points a game.
An underrated trade comes out of “Sac-Town” where Sacramentos De’Aaron Fox was dealt to the San Antonio Spurs. The Kings received Keldon Johnson, Tre Jones, and a future first-round pick. Fox will now join the second-year sensation Victor Wembanyama, giving the Spurs that missing piece they’ve been looking to pair with Wembanyama on both sides of the ball. Fans are excited to see if this move will bring the Spurs back to the playoffs and become contenders for years to come.
The Charlotte Hornets planned to trade center Mark Williams to the Los Angeles Lakers, however, the deal was voided because of a failed physical. Williams had recently recovered from a foot injury, but the Lakers were not convinced due to his health history and extended absences. Williams later admitted he was confused about the decision since he had been playing for full minutes and felt healthy.
These trades have brought major attention to the NBA. Many claim it was the biggest deadline in history which included many shocking trades. Fans are excited about how the rest of the season plays out heading into the playoffs and if these new pieces can bring their new teams to the next level.
