Masconomet honored 11 senior field hockey athletes with a dominating 6-0 win over Danvers on senior night. The Chieftains blew the competition away from start to finish, using the memorable evening to finish off a night to remember.
The team’s commanding victory was the perfect way to mark senior night, showcasing the chemistry, teamwork, and dedication that have defined the senior class.
“The bond they’ve built, many of them since their youth field hockey days, created a level of trust and chemistry that showed on the field. When they play for one another, everything clicks,” said coach Vannesa McGuire.
McGuire said that these seniors have been particularly meaningful to her after returning to the team.
“Seeing them honored for their commitment and love for the program makes this night especially emotional. These 11 seniors truly deserve to be recognized and celebrated,” said McGuire.
Seniors Olivia Tsoukalas, Maddy Regan, and Genevieve Clapp all had one goal, while the Chieftains got three goals from senior Ava Guavain. This performance completely shut down Danvers.
The team’s dominant win over Danvers reflected not just skill but years of shared effort and connection. McGuire credited the seniors for giving back to the program through youth clinics and community involvement.
“These seniors have given back selflessly, volunteering at youth clinics and officiating games to grow the sport in our community. Their presence has shaped the heart of this program,” said McGuire.
Clapp said that the emotion surrounding the field made it one to remember. After years of hard work alongside teammates, the moment felt both surreal and rewarding.
“Senior night was a night we really saw the team come together. It was a night we had been waiting for, our turn for years, and having it finally happen was truly special,” said Clapp.
Clapp and Guavin have been key contributors to the team’s success, both on and off the field.
“Over the years, we have always tried our hardest to contribute to the team on and off the field. Whether it was participating in spirit days or giving-and-gos up the sideline, we always try to make a positive impact,” said Clapp.
As the seniors prepare to graduate, Coach McGuire hopes they carry what they’ve learned with them.
“I hope this senior class leaves knowing that when they commit to something fully, they are capable of accomplishing hard things,” said McGuire. “The lessons they’ve learned on the field, like resilience, teamwork, and grit will carry them far beyond high school.”
Savannah Stevens, a four-year varsity athlete, is one of several seniors continuing their athletic careers in college. While Stevens is also a standout field hockey player, she has committed to Stonehill College for track and field.
“It was a tough decision, and I knew I definitely wanted to do a sport in college, but track was something that I saw myself doing for the next four years because it is something that I love so much,” said Stevens. “I will miss field hockey so much, and it is mostly the team aspect that I will miss the most, because track is more of an individual sport rather than a team sport.”
Teammates Clapp and Guavin will be joining Stevens at Stonehill, though they will also both continue their field hockey careers there.
“Playing with Ava since I was little and truly growing our games together has also been a huge help in becoming better and accomplishing being committed,” said Clapp. “Personally, I am super excited for this next chapter after high school and cannot wait to see what we both accomplish.”
As the final whistles blow later this season, Masconomet seniors prepare to leave the field one last time, marking the end of a season that celebrates years of dedication, teamwork, and leadership.
