Three times. I went to see The Batman three times in the theater. The first time was with my father. I was immediately swept into the world of Gotham City. I walked out of the theater feeling like Batman. That was the effect of this movie. Its atmosphere was so well-built that it made me feel heroic.
It was released on March 4, 2022, directed by Matt Reeves. This movie does just about everything right. The opening scene might just be the best opening scene in any superhero movie ever. The beginning monologue perfectly establishes the world, the vibes, and the Batman. The score is eerie and perfect.
This movie also stars a perfect cast. Robert Pattinson nails the reclusive Bruce Wayne while giving Batman a type of anger that hasn’t been seen before. Ben Affleck’s Batman was rageful and murderous, but this version still maintains the no-killing rule. Jeffery Wright is also perfect as a younger James Gordon, who relies on Batman to solve cases. Colin Farrell is so good as the Penguin that a lot of people still don’t realize it was him.
This movie also does what only The Lego Batman Movie did with its story – it gave Batman a good character arc. He starts the movie off as a violent and rageful agent of vengeance. He uses fear to his advantage to try to deter people from committing crimes. The first person he saves in this movie is scared to death by him. But by the end of the movie, he realizes that he has to change and be a symbol of hope and not vengeance. He sees that the villains are taking inspiration from him and that he might actually be doing more harm than good.
A lot of people say that this movie isn’t funny. Those people are dead wrong. This movie is hilarious, clever, and cheesy. It embraces the dumb, comic book humor while keeping it in line with the tone. The scene where Gordon yells at the Penguin to look at a disgusting picture is comedy gold. This movie is genuinely humorous, it just doesn’t use the MCU-style quips.
The action of this movie is some of the best in any Batman movie. The opening fight with the gang is so well-choreographed and the final fight scene is actually epic. When Batman arrives to save everyone, he has the coolest entrance that any superhero has ever had in a movie and he immediately starts kicking butt.
I’ve heard this movie described as boring, which is a matter of opinion, but I don’t see it that way. The gripping mystery is enough to keep this movie entertaining and the way it twists and goes in different directions than expected keeps it engaging. Every scene in this movie serves a purpose… except for the Joker scene at the end. That could have been cut.
This movie also looks beautiful. The cinematography is gorgeous and each shot looks like a painting. The scene taking place at golden hour is breathtaking. The sunlight in the city is glamorous.
This movie is next to perfect for me. I can’t wait until part two comes out. It should be absolutely amazing as long as it doesn’t get delayed or canceled. The director plans to push to the edge of fantasy without becoming unrealistic.
