Wayne is an action TV series that was released in 2019. Sure, it was canceled after only one season, but people always have that one favorite show of theirs that sadly ended too soon, and I hope this show becomes that for you.
The show was created by Shawn Simmons and stars Mark Mckenna as Wayne and Ciara Bravo as his love interest, Del. All 10 episodes are available to watch on Prime Video.
The story starts when Del goes to Wayne’s house to sell cookies. There was always a romantic spark in their relationship. They’re unhappy with their families and the life they’ve been dealt. Wayne is on a mission to take back his late father’s stolen car, which was stolen in honor of him. Del comes along as she wishes to stick by his side. Their disappearance leads to a wild goose chase from Brockton, Massachusetts, where the show is based, to Florida.
It was impressive how the actors were able to pull off Boston accents, especially Mckenna, considering he is Irish. Along with the accent came the attitude usually associated with it, and both of them played the role perfectly. They were able to make use of stereotypical slang like “wicked”, but impressively managed to not make it sound like a parody.
I enjoyed how the show had a very distinct color palette of browns and grays, which made everything cohesive and clearly depicted how they were from this gloomy, run-down city. Most often, the action genre has a serious plot, but this felt much more like a comedy, as the timing and sound effects used really helped lighten the mood. This contrast of the comedy and moody imagery is what I think helps it be seen as a dark comedy. This was specifically true when it came to scenes where it showed Wayne’s violent nature, which may sound alarming, but instead was funny, as when he’s about to get into a fight, the scene uses generic rock music and slow motion clips. Since Wayne seems to be nonchalant, scenes where he suddenly smashes things with his hammer or stabs his own hand feel funny, as both the characters around him and the viewers don’t expect these actions.

One thing that I found bothersome about the show was that the side plots felt a bit unnecessary at times and annoying since the main plot was so much more interesting. I found myself wanting to skip over scenes. They felt like the characters who are there for comedic relief, but this doesn’t feel necessary since the show isn’t that dark or serious and there are already plenty of laughs from Wayne and Del’s adventures.
The general consensus from critics is that the show is overall a fun watch. With its combination of all the distinct characters and the different battles they go through, the show feels chaotic and unpredictable. This, of course, is in a positive way, as the comedic nature of the show makes it an easy watch for the most part. Considering that it sadly only has one season, it is a great show to binge-watch. And trust me it will be hard not to keep watching episodes once you’ve started.
The main actors, Bravo and McKenna, took their on-screen relationship off-screen and have been dating ever since the show started filming in 2018. This is most likely the reason why their relationship on screen felt so genuine and endearing.
I hope this show becomes one of your favorites as it’s incredibly underrated and deserves much more love. It may be too late to have a second season, but the first season is enough to have you non-stop watching.
