Model UN’s trip to BC High on March 1 was yet another success for Masco delegates as they got out of their comfort zone and represented the school.
BC High MUN provided a grander conference than previous schools, with large spread out committees in libraries or auditoriums that made each one feel vastly different. But it also provided a greater challenge, as many students from other schools were experienced and committed.
One of the more advanced committees was USAPC Ad Hoc, a crisis committee which centered around a US political emergency. A crisis committee is a fast-moving and ever-changing debate, where you have to be on your toes. Delegates also have no clue what position they are until the day of the event, giving them little prep time before discussion.
Junior Hudson Schmieder, who assumed the role of Joe Biden during the committee, was prepared for the unexpected.
“I’ve mostly been in crisis committees, but there’s definitely a big difference because it is much more fast paced and it’s good to do if you want to learn how to react quickly on the spot,” Schmieder said.
Moving over to a more traditional committee, there was also Mass & Cass, which junior Rudy Chilel Lopez attended as Kevin Hayden. Mass & Cass was focused on homelessness and housing inequality, and provided an important perspective for students like Chilel Lopez.
“What stood out to me was how little people in our community know about this and just how close it is to us,” Lopez said.
The counselor side of things was a bit different for this event. Co-Adviser Laura Greeley wasn’t available for the conference, so Model UN club’s other co-adviser, Peter Magner, took her place and got to observe some of what BC High MUN had to offer this time around.
“It’s a well-run conference – events kept to the schedule, and I heard from most that their committees were good,” Magner said.
The positive feedback and great performance from Masco students makes BC High MUN a success for Masco.
With BC High MUN out of the way, the Model UN club excitedly looks forward to their next event at ClarkMUN on March 29.
