Never in my entire life have I witnessed such camaraderie in a movie theater. The sheer unity I felt while watching A Minecraft Movie was truly something to behold. This film took almost a decade to make, with the announcement stemming from 2016. Since then, everything was unsure, and people were very worried when it was announced that the movie would be in live-action. But it seems that the exceptional marketing for this movie has paid off.
I have never seen the AMC at the Liberty Tree Mall so packed. People were walking through the mall, talking about the movie. This mall is all but dead, but I couldn’t even get snacks before the movie started. I was standing in line to order when some kids asked me what movie I was watching, and I replied with “Minecraft.” They responded by saying how good it was.
This movie functions at its best with a full and energetic theater. It was amazing waiting for the next meme quote and having the entire theater say it in unison and cheer.
While it may seem like a questionable decision to cast Jack Black as Steve, it actually paid off more than the filmmakers could have ever imagined. Without the memes of him saying different things from the game, this movie would not be nearly as successful. He
brings such a fun energy to the movie that I did not expect.
My friend put it perfectly. It’s a good movie and a decent adaptation of the game. The details and easter eggs are fun. The movie can be serious
for incredibly brief moments and then immediately go right back into the fun. There is a moment at the end that is jokingly sentimental, and I found myself actually liking the main dynamic between Steve and Jason Momoa’s character, Garret “The Garbage Man” Garrison. Their friendship is fun to watch unfold, and the chemistry between Black and Momoa is palpable, to say the least. The other characters were good but not as fun as these two.
This movie shattered many expectations of those who were not in the know. It was projected to make about $70-90 million on the opening weekend. This is impressive, but it was crushed by the actual opening weekend. A Minecraft Movie made $163 million in three
days, and it shows no sign of stopping. To put this into perspective, the movie’s budget was only $150 million. It made $60 million on Saturday alone. And all of this is just the domestic box office. The movie made $313 million globally on its opening weekend, as stated by CNN, and many say it could be on track to make a billion dollars.
These days, the movies that make the most seem to be because of memes and the internet. Barbie and Oppenheimer wouldn’t have made nearly as much money if not for the “Barbenheimer” meme. And how could we forget the “Gentleminions”. While these are fun, it is important to stay respectful. As was the case with the minions meme, many people are making huge messes and throwing popcorn all over the theater. Just because the joke is funny doesn’t mean people can behave however they want. It’ll only make the janitor’s job harder.
