Under the bright lights of Dr. Deering Stadium in Danvers, the Masco Chieftains soared past the Danvers Falcons, 2-0.
After some elite defense to open from both teams, junior midfielder Sophie Nelson struck gold when she found the back of the net with a one-timer in the top corner off a cross to the middle from junior right full back Ava Wexler.
In recent memory, once the Chieftains get a lead, it’s nearly impossible to claw back, and that was again the case tonight.
Masco went into the break up 1-0 but hungry to extend their lead.
In the middle of the second half, after a throw-in that bounced off the Falcons, junior Brooke Hagerty saw an opportunity to put the Falcons’ chances to rest. Hagerty buried a shot from the 12, giving Masco a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Juniors Sadie Morris, Ada Paglierani, and Wexler, along with freshman Maddy Orchiuk, anchored a daunting Chieftains defense, not allowing Danvers to get many good looks.
In her third year as a starter, shutouts have been common for junior goalie Evie Mills, and tonight was no different. Mills had active hands and was quick in tracking the ball.
The reigning state champs have now won four straight and have looked strong since their game-one loss. The ladies now set their sights on their game against Salem at their place on Wednesday at 4:30.
