If you are looking for a classic comedy show, one where you are guaranteed to be laughing in the first five minutes, then Modern Family is for you.
Modern Family, which aired from 2009 to 2020 which is on Hulu and Peacock, is set in Los Angeles and focuses on three somehow connected families, the Dunphys, Pritchetts, and Tuckers, all of whom are related through Jay Pritchett.
From the first episode of the series, I was invested. I just could not stop watching because of how good the show was. I couldn’t go five minutes without laughing, which shows how well the show is written. I found that the chaos of the series is what made it so good, from the generational differences of Jay and Gloria to the challenges of raising teenagers of Claire and Phil, to the challenges of navigating family life of Cameron and Mitchell.
What consistently kept me so invested and wanting me to keep watching the series was the fact that the characters are so relatable. I felt that I could relate most to the Dunphys as their family seemed to be the most average, everyday family, similar to mine. Something different than in other TV shows is that it is more like an interview with the characters, as in between scenes, they will talk directly to the camera.
My personal favorite episode of the series is Episode 16 in Season 6, titled “ Connection Lost”, where the whole family is stranded at the airport. Claire is trying to reconnect with one of her daughters after a huge fight, and the whole family ends up getting drawn into the drama. This episode shows just how good the series is and makes you want to keep watching. Another one of my favorite episodes in the series is also Episode 23 in Season 1, titled “Hawaii,” where vows are renewed, children get left in elevators, and several things just seem to go wrong.
My favorite character in the series is Cameron, because of how funny and dramatic he is. He just brings so much to the show, and I loved watching how he and his family evolved throughout the series. From his arguments with Mitchell to his dramatic and emotional personality, that is what makes him the best character.
What I liked most about this series is how close together all three families were to each other; even through their arguments and their differing opinions, they still always managed to put a comical view on everything.
For anyone who wants a show that they can binge-watch for weeks on end, Modern Family is a great show, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a good watch.
