The great thing about sports is that, depending on the day, you always have a chance at witnessing an absolute classic. Depending on the sport, there can be different levels of excitement and skill. However, when categorizing the greatest games ever played, any sport is on the table. Here’s my list of the greatest sports games ever played.
Patriots vs Falcons (2017)
This game was one of the first sports games I remember really being into. The legendary 28-3 comeback on one of the biggest stages for American sports was legendary in every right. The offensive masterclass from Tom Brady and the Patriots, and the defensive struggle that followed for the Falcons, was nothing but pure excellence from New England. Plays like the Edelman catch barely being able to get his hand under the football for the clutch conversion, or the James White touchdown to win the greatest comeback in Super Bowl History, put this game at number 1.
Masconomet vs Marblehead (2025)
With the Northeast Conference (NEC) title on the line, down 17 with 5 minutes left, Masco needed nothing short of a miracle to get back into this game. But the tiles fell in the right place, and after some of the greatest 5 minutes of football in Masco history, Masco prevailed in one of the craziest comebacks some have ever seen. Starting from a 67-yard touchdown from sophomore receiver Trip Weidman, and a game-winning touchdown from star running back Jack Fabiano. Masco was able to force it to one last field goal for Marblehead that was shanked right, giving Masco the win after being down 17 with 5:30 on the clock. The student section was electric. Even being down so much in such a short time, the boys on the field never gave up, and neither did the fans.
Argentina vs France (2022)
The 2022 World Cup was one of the best sporting tournaments ever played. Based in Qatar, the World Cup is always seen nostalgically by fans of the beautiful game due to the strange timing of the event, leading games to be played during the school day. Students tried their best to sneak looks at the game during class, or sometimes the teacher had it on the projector. In these moments, the feel of the World Cup was above any other. The final was set to be a good one with Argentina going up against the 2018 winner, France. Lionel Messi was hoping for his first World Cup win, and Kylian Mbappe was hoping to add another World Cup to his resume. Argentina had absolute control for 80 minutes, being up 2-0 with 10 minutes left in regulation. But Mbappe showed why he was one of the best in big moments, scoring 2 goals in 2 minutes, making it level in the biggest stage in sports. Going into extra time, Messi was able to get a put-back goal just over the line to give them the 3-2 lead, but of course, France was given a penalty, and who else to put the finishing touches on it but Mbappe. He scored the second-ever hat trick in World Cup finals history, but even with all of this, France still lost to Argentina 4-2 in penalties. This cemented Messi’s legacy as one of the greatest soccer players of all time and brought in Argentina’s third-ever World Cup.
