As fall sports come to a close, that opens a new set of doors for the winter season. Past state champions, the Masco ski team, head into the season with a clear sense of positivity and pride. The team is led by three strong team captains, setting the expectations for the rest.
“Happy, strong, and positive,” said senior captain Violet Malinowski. This is how the Masco Ski Team is described in three words.
The great environment of this team, both on and off the slopes, creates the foundation for their success. The unconditional support is always present, whether it is with hot chocolate waiting for you at the end of your run or constant cheering at the starting line of the race course.
“We are always laughing and lifting each other up,” said Malinowski.
Though winning is the goal, the main priority is always making sure the athletes are having fun. The team is competitive, always seeking to gain new skills with confidence and a sense of belonging.
“Our girls have real aspirations to win the state championship, and for the boys, taking down the [Saint John’s] Prep would be a dream result,” said coach Ryan Quinn. “One of our main goals is guiding our captains to step into more vocal leadership roles and really function as player-coaches who elevate the entire team.”
As the team enters the season with exceptionally strong skiers, leadership is more important than ever. In a sport where depth determines the outcome of the team matchups, the team heavily relies on its more experienced athletes to set the tone, strengthen the team chemistry, and help elevate everyone’s performance.
For the past 20 years, Masco has consistently been the hardest-working team in the North Shore Ski League. That commitment, combined with a genuine team-first attitude, is what makes this group special.
“Our biggest strengths are our team spirit and our work ethic,” said Quinn. “Working hard together in the freezing cold January nights really helps us bond together as one unit.”
Skill levels will always vary, but the racers who thrive are the ones who want to improve every day, who embrace challenges, and who aren’t afraid to lay it all on the line. In a sport with such margin-thin results, laying it all on the line is usually what it takes to win, and that is only possible when you believe you can do it.
“One of the most important roles we hold as coaches is to encourage our racers to be the best version of themselves. When we show them how much we believe in them, they begin to believe more in themselves, and that’s when real growth occurs,” said Quinn.
In addition to all the great characteristics of this team, they also value unity and dedication. These qualities not only boost results on the slopes but also shape a team culture that everyone is proud to contribute to.
“When everyone feels supported and motivated, we ski better, and create a team environment we’re proud to be part of,” said senior captain Hannah Mitchell.
The team’s focus on connection, leadership, and team values set the foundation for their successful season. By building confidence, and promoting commitment and teamwork, they create an environment where athletes can thrive.
