Head Coach of the Chicago Bears, Ben Johnson, has done something that no Bears head coach had done since 2018…beat the Green Bay Packers in Chicago.
On Saturday night, the Bears defeated the Packers 22-16 in overtime, thanks to late game heroics from quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver DJ Moore.
The Bears vs Packers rivalry has been nothing less than total domination from the Packers for the last decade. Since 2015, the Bears had just a 2-17 record against their familiar foe.
The Bears had just lost to the Packers two weeks ago in heartbreaking fashion, so this game was important for them to win.
In the most anticipated game of the season, if the Bears won they would be one step closer to winning the NFC North.
While being down most of the game, the Bears have been in that position before. The Bears had 5 game winning drives heading into the week 15 matchup.
Kicker Cairo Santos hit three difficult field goals to put his team in a position to tie the game.
Santos then had the difficult task of helping his team recover an onside kick, which ended up being perfectly placed to give the Bears a chance to tie the game.
Being down 16-9 Williams knew it was time for him to do what he’s done best all season and put his team in winning situations.
On 4th down at the Packers six yard line, Williams found undrafted rookie Jahdae Walker for the game tying touchdown.
However, the game was not done yet.
The Packers had the ball first in OT and were marching down the field until quarterback Malik Willis was stopped a yard short of the line to gain.
Head Coach Matt LeFleur kept his team out there for a chance at a first down. The snap was botched and the Bears stopped them short. It was up to Williams once again to help his team get another clutch win.
Williams saw that chance and took it.
The ball floated up in the air for what felt like hours. Time seemed to have stopped. Every fan inside Soldier Field was wondering what was about to happen.
The ball went straight into wide receiver DJ Moore’s hands for a 46 yard game winning touchdown.
After the game Moore praised Williams for his heroic efforts, “He just was cool, calm, and collected all game. And when we needed a big play, he was there to put it on the money,” per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.
The stadium rejoiced as the Bears had won at their own home stadium against the Packers for the first time since 2018.
The coincidence? The last time the Bears had won the division.
“I’ve said it multiple times. We’re going to fight,” said Wiliams to Fox Sports Tom Brady after the comeback win. “We’re going to fight until the clock says zero. And from there, we’ll give it our best shot.”
That’s been the story of the season for the Bears.
No matter what, with Caleb Williams at quarterback and Ben Johnson at head coach, the Bears will always have a chance to win.
