If you go to school, then you’ve gotten homework, and if you’ve gotten homework, you know how frustrating it can be. Teachers often assign it at the end of the class with the intention of helping students practice what they learned during class. While this may seem helpful, many students would argue that homework does more harm than good. By adding extra stress and taking away valuable free time, homework seems to have no benefits at all.
Although homework is usually given with good intentions, it should not be a regular requirement in school. Students already spend over six hours a day learning in classrooms with very few breaks. After a long day filled with lessons, tests, and presentations, students are mentally exhausted. Instead of being forced to continue working when they get home, students should have time to relax, recharge, and focus on themselves. Learning is most effective when students are well rested and motivated, not overwhelmed,
One major problem with homework is the stress it causes. When students are assigned large amounts of additional work from multiple classes, it is easy for them to feel overworked and overwhelmed. This constant pressure lowers motivation and makes students dread school. Instead of seeing learning as something positive and interesting, students may begin to view school as a burden. In reality, school should be a place for students to explore interests and learn comfortably.
In most cases, large amounts of work result in large amounts of stress. This can be hard for younger people to handle and can reach unhealthy levels, resulting in anxiety, trouble sleeping, and burnout.
When students are too busy completing homework every night, they may not have enough time for both physical and mental health, and homework often gets in the way.
Another problem that homework creates is how it takes up too much personal time. Most people engage in their own extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, music, or part-time jobs. Others need time to spend with family and friends or simply relax. It is important that everyone has time for themselves because it helps students develop hobbies, manage stress, and maintain a healthy balance in their lives. When homework takes up most of the evening, students lose that balance.
Homework adds unnecessary stress, affects students’ health, and takes away personal time. Reducing or eliminating it would give students the chance to relax, enjoy their interests, and stay motivated to learn. School should help students grow, not overwhelm them. By focusing on meaningful, engaging activities during the school day instead of excessive assignments at home, students can develop a love for learning while maintaining their well being and balance in life.
