You wake up in the morning with bags under your eyes and your stomach grumbling. You really hope that today will be a happy day, but the rain clouds are covering the sun, and the world feels dark and gloomy.
As you walk down the stairs, the day gets bright, and that miserable look on your face vanishes. Waiting for you on the kitchen counter–a delicious plate of scrambled eggs just how you like them, crispy bacon on the side, toast the perfect brown color, and to top it off, a tall glass of orange juice.
Breakfast gives you the perfect opportunity to start your day off strong, with a boost of energy to improve your health and brighten your day.
According to the Better Health Channel, “Eating breakfast boosts your energy levels and restores your glycogen levels, ready to keep your metabolism up for the day.”
I notice a huge difference in my mornings when I have a nutritious breakfast. This makes the meal key to having a great day, because a good morning sets my mood for the rest of the day. I don’t know that I’d be able to make it to dinner without the nutrition of a healthy breakfast.
It also gives you the opportunity for growth in learning in school by improving your overall academic performance.
According to the Food Research & Action Center, “Research supports…a well-nourished child who starts the day with breakfast is more likely to be at school, a better learner, and willing to participate in the classroom.”
Before a big exam or a final project, I always wondered why my teachers would tell me to eat a good breakfast in the morning. And now I understand why. The nutrients that breakfast food provides is key for a well functioning brain. Without these nutrients, my brain moves slower, and I experience more difficulty in learning and test taking.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a survey which concluded that, “42% of U.S. high school students with mostly A’s ate breakfast on all 7 days. This compares to 20% of students with mostly D’s/F’s.”
Eating breakfast in the morning makes a difference in my school day academically. I am more successful when taking tests, doing homework, and paying attention in class. There are only benefits in eating breakfast, so why wouldn’t I?
On a more serious note, long-term health is affected by eating breakfast each morning. A good diet includes a healthy breakfast, which is important in terms of quality future health.
According to the Apple a Day Virtual Clinic, “Regularly eating a healthy breakfast is associated with a lower risk of several chronic conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.”
Even though making breakfast may take a little time in the morning, it’s definitely worth it. Whether you spend 5 minutes grabbing yogurt and a banana or 20 minutes making toast and eggs, breakfast can set a positive tone for your entire day.
I plan on eating breakfast each and every morning because a good diet could potentially save me from having to deal with difficult conditions in the future. Right now, I am lucky enough not to have to experience any of these illnesses, and I would love to keep it that way. If enjoying a plate of eggs and bacon in the mornings will prevent me from heart disease, I will finish each and every plate.
Breakfast is much more than just a simple meal in the morning; it is the foundation for energy, academic success, and long-term health. Taking a few moments each morning to enjoy a healthy breakfast can set the tone for a productive, positive day and future overall. And no other meal of the day can do all that.
