The World Cup Draw is one of the most important events leading up to the tournament. Deciding which teams will play who in the group stage can completely shape a team’s chance of advancing. For the United States Men’s National Team, the draw was very favorable and could give a major boost for the long run later in the tournament.
First, the USA avoided the toughest international powerhouse in the group stage. Instead of facing top-ranked giants like Brazil, France, Spain, England, or Argentina right away, the US landed in a group with teams that are competitive but beatable, facing a Paraguay team that has struggled to make it out of the group stage in prior years, and Australia, which has seen success in prior group stages but not much in the knockout stage, and finally a playoff team that has yet to be decided. This gives the group a better chance to open the tournament with confidence, rather than quickly falling into survival mode. It also allows the US to build more chemistry for the long run with this young squad.
“This group the US has drawn will be very beneficial for them to gain some momentum going forward into the tournament,” said junior soccer player Soren Scarpaci.
American striker and US captain Christian Pulisic has been in some of the best form of his career. After an impressive 3-goal contribution in the tournament and a man-of-the-match performance against a strong England team, he has been seen as a leader, and his play has set the standard for the rest of the US men’s team. He has also been great in the Series A league in Italy, having already scored 8 goals, despite coming off an injury for AC Milan.
“Personally, I believe it would be harder for the US not to get out of their group, especially the way Pulisic has been playing, they should easily advance to the Knockouts,” said Spanish teacher and soccer fan Eric Bonnano.
Additionally, the pull lowers travel pressure. The United States avoids needless fatigue by playing matches in the US. Long international travel lengths have negatively affected the team’s success in previous competitions.
“Having home-field advantage is probably the best thing for this US team. Morale is going to be at an all-time high; this is the year for a deep US run, ” said senior Jeremiah Garcia.
At the end of the day, the World Cup Draw did not ensure the US would win the whole thing, but it did provide the US with an equally crucial chance. The USMNT now has a real chance to make an impact internationally. They have their best opportunity in years thanks to this draw, and supporters should be thrilled.
