My Girl, produced in 1991 by Howard Zeiff, is one of those movies I never get bored of, in fact it is one of my top comfort films. It’s a touching movie that shows what it is like to grow up and deal with change. The story follows an 11-year-old girl named Vada Sultenfuss as she experiences friendship, family struggles, and big emotions that kids don’t always know how to deal with. Even though the movie was made over 30 years ago, its message still feels important and relatable today.
One reason My Girl is such a good movie is that Vada is the main character. She is sarcastic, curious, and sometimes dramatic, which helps bring her character to life. Vada thinks a lot about death and sickness, especially since her dad works at a funeral home. At the same time, she deals with normal kid problems like having a crush, feeling jealous, and wanting attention. Many people who watch this may see themselves relating to Vada, which makes her easy to understand and connect with.
Another highlight of the movie is Vada’s friendship with Thomas J., played by Macaulay Culkin. Thomas J. is kind, shy, and always there for Vada when she needs him. Their friendship feels genuine and shows what it is like to have someone who truly supports you. They go on small adventures, share secrets, and stick together even when things are tough. Their bond is one of the best parts of the movie, and it’s amazing that they also don’t let other people’s thoughts pull them apart.
One remarkable trait of Vada is her ability to remain unaffected by other people’s opinions. Throughout the movie, there are moments when a group of girls mocks Vada for various aspects of her life or her friendship with Thomas J. However, she stands her ground and reassures herself and Thomas that their friendship means more than people’s opinions.
The movie also shows how kids sometimes feel misunderstood by adults. Vada often feels ignored and unsure where she fits in. As she watched the people around her change, she realised that growing up means learning to handle some situations you can’t control. These moments help Vada become more independent and mature, showing that even uncomfortable situations help someone grow.
My Girl has a warm and nostalgic feel that makes it enjoyable to watch. The summer setting, small-town scenery, and music all help create a calm and comforting atmosphere. The balance between funny moments and serious moments never feels forced. The movie teaches about family, friendship, and appreciating people in your life. If you’re looking for a meaningful film, My Girl is definitely worth watching.
