The Masconomet Boys’ Tennis Team is beyond excited to get onto the courts and have another great season. They are ready to prove why this could be the first time they win the MIAA Championship.
The team has a lot to look forward to, with a lot of returning players coming onto the team and a couple of new players ready to join a very experienced lineup.
They are also finding a lot of success in being able to encourage the younger players to improve rapidly. Students are teaching students, and this brings out a well-rounded environment towards a winning team.
Senior Captain Arjun Shreyakar said that this team has the potential to be a contender for the MIAA Championship.
Regardless of the competition, though, Shreyakar simply enjoys the sport.
“Tennis is a sport where you could win more points than your opponent and still lose. There’s no time limit, no one is rushing to the finish line or tackling each other like in football,” he said. “You play the ball, not your opponent. It’s a sport where it is not over until the final point. That’s what keeps me so intrigued to play tennis.”
There is so much room for improvement in tennis, too. Shreyakar said that with a lot of hard work, he went from the worst player on his team to becoming the first All-Conference Player for Masco Boys’ Tennis. An incredible achievement that has been proven to be reached with a lot of hard work and determination.
Senior Captain Parker Kurtz said he loves the environment of the team and the people around him.
“The opportunity to collaborate with my team members and work toward a common goal definitely fosters a super supportive team environment,” Kurtz said. “Also, another way we build chemistry is with our rotating snack schedule.”
Like Shreyakar, he also had ideas about how the team can become successful on the courts.
“If you are striving to become a more confident or less nervous person, tennis can be a great avenue for you,” said Kurtz. “For me, being able to stay loose and have confidence to demonstrate what I’ve learned in practice has become extremely rewarding.”
Coach Matt Nardone has been impressed with his team.
“This group of athletes is special because of the time, effort, and commitment they put in during the offseason to train with an eye towards improving their overall games so that we can have a successful season,” said Nardone.
He is also looking forward to qualifying for the MIAA Boys’ Tennis State Tournament.
“This is my thirteenth year as coach, and we have qualified every year. We have one of the more talented teams this year than we have had in years, and our goal is to win the conference and make a deep run in the State Tournament.”
The Boys’ Tennis team is confident, prepared, and excited to have another successful season.
Their chemistry is unmatched; each person had nothing but positive things to say about each other, and although tennis is run by singles and doubles, there is no doubt that Masco Boys’ Tennis is truly a team sport.
