Season two of the Netflix series Arcane has wrapped up, and it has cemented itself as one of the greatest animated shows of all time. Not only is it one of the most visually appealing and creative shows in existence, but the voice performances are also incredible. Everyone is giving it their all.
The animation is super creative because they invented a new style of animation for the show. It’s sort of in the same vein as the Spider-Verse movies in that it blends 2D and 3D animation. It’s super vibrant and fluid and it separates the show from other animated series.
This show also broke a record that not even Breaking Bad, which is regarded to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time, could beat. Every episode of Arcane season two has scored above a 9/10 on IMDb. It also has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes which very few movies or TV shows have.
This show has two amazing soundtracks for each season. I’ve already done a review of “The Line” by Twenty One Pilots but there are so many other great songs, like “To Ashes and Blood”, “Spin the Wheel”, and “Ma Meilleure Ennemie”. All of these songs add to whatever scene they’re in. Some songs make a fight scene more epic or a romantic scene more intimate. Song segments in this show (especially season two) can lead to a whole different animation style for a scene.
Many shows are character-driven and Arcane takes this to the next level. It’s not often one finds a show where every character is well-written and has a fleshed-out story and character progression. Not just the main characters Vi, Jinx, Jayce, Viktor, and Mel, but also secondary characters like Ekko, Silco, and Sevika.
This show is full of perfect performances. Ella Purnell as Jinx is immaculate casting. She perfectly plays the tortured villain with a mountain of inner conflict. Hailee Steinfeld is also giving an amazing performance as Jinx’s older sister, Vi. Her being split between wanting to help her new friend Caitlyn who is from the topside and her need to find her sister work wonderfully.
People seem to not like Heimerdinger, who is a little four-foot tall creature who is very old. He does try to slow down the production of Hextech, which is the magic-powered technology created by Jayce Talis, but his intentions are well founded. He is simply worried that rushing this technology will lead to catastrophe and he wants to avoid that at all costs. He has seen the horrors that can happen if magic falls into the wrong hands.
This series stands out in an age where it seems like studios care less and less about the projects they create and force things out whether they are good or not. But this is a refreshing reprieve from that. The people making this truly care about the story they tell.
