WBMT will be hosting a “boiler room” DJ set on Friday, January 24. The show will be hosted by the WBMT executive board. Admission to the event is free and pizza and refreshments will be provided. This event will stand out from other events hosted by WBMT.
A “boiler room” set is not like a regular DJ set. The idea is that people are close together and the DJ is not on a stage or stand.
“ It’s inspired by the idea that in a boiler room, if you were to have a DJ set there, there wouldn’t be a lot of space,” said radio advisor Matthew Chadwick, “and instead of the DJ having a booth set in the back, Or away from the crowd, the DJ is right in the middle of the crowd, really in the mix.”
This idea captured the club in a way that others didn’t. It is a simple concept that could lead to something huge.
“We were trying to come up with more events to host,” said senior station manager Maya Schildkraut, “and one thing that caught our attention was this concept of a boiler room DJ set. It is supposed to be pretty small and intimate, hence the size of the space we are hosting this in.”
There is a lot planned for this that many may not have experienced before. The lighting and overall vibe are things that Masco hasn’t attempted before.
“People can expect dark, red lights, music, probably a lot of electronic music of different types. So, techno, witch house, industrial, glitch pop, all sorts of stuff is going to be played. It’s also a good opportunity to show off your fashion as well.”
This event will help to open the floodgates of what can be done at Masco. There don’t seem to be many big events, but this aims to change that.
“We do hope to do more community events in the future,” said junior assistant manager London Thompson. “ I personally find that Masco feels very isolated and does not have many events planned, so we really hope to do something like this again.”
WBMT has flown largely under the radar for the past few years and those running it hope to change that. They are working to bring the club to the mainstream and this event should help.
“ The biggest desired outcome is for people to have fun, right?” said Chadwick. “But also, in a larger sense, I think this would help boost the club’s profile. This would kind of show people at Masco that the club is involved in the community and does all sorts of stuff. This coupled with Battle of the Bands would kind of raise the profile of the club.”
Events like these are rare at Masco and who knows when there will be another one like it. And there are free food and drinks so there’s no reason not to check it out.
