Cate Wettstone is a star junior captain currently playing for the Chieftains’ volleyball team. Wettsone is a middle hitter and is considered one of the best hitters in the state, leading the Chieftains to a 13-2 record and ranked 20th in the state via maxpreps.com.
“Our team is having so much success early on in the season because our team chemistry is strong. We are all super close and committed to the sport, putting in so much work at practice to get better,” said Wettstone. “ We also have some of the best hitters and defensive players in the conference and state.”
As a junior captain, Wettstone is a role model for her fellow teammates, displaying leadership on and off the court.
“Our captains have set a great example this year for the team by bringing so much energy,” she said.
Since making varsity her freshman year, Wettsone has made a huge impact on the volleyball program as one of the best players in the last handful of years. However, win or lose, it wouldn’t be the same without the friendships she’s created with her teammates.
“Overall, my favorite part about Masco Volleyball is spending time with the girls on the team both on and off the court. Going to pasta parties, or grabbing something to eat before a home game has been so much fun these past couple of years and has also made our bond on the court so much stronger,” she said. “That’s what makes our team special from others; we are so close with each other, and it really has made this sport so much more enjoyable for me.”
Wettsone’s best game came earlier this season against Lynnfield. Lynnfield is a solid team and took Masco into the fifth set but fell short thanks to an unbelievable career-high 23 kills for Wettstone, who was awarded most valuable player (MVP) of that game.
Wettsone is already getting some collegiate looks mid-way through her junior season for her elite skills, great height, and terrifying spike.
“I am definitely interested in continuing playing in college, and I am currently speaking with a few colleges to see what I am looking for in a school. I see volleyball as a lifelong sport and can’t imagine not playing in the future,” she said.
As we now creep deeper into October, Wettsone and her teammates’ main goal is to continue winning and hopefully bring home the division two state title this year.
