The Chieftains escaped round one with a 2-0 win against the Blue Devils.
When the first 30 minutes ran out, both teams were still tied at 0 going into the break. Both teams’ defensive attacks were phenomenal, as junior Captain Savannah Stevens led the wall of white for Masco.
Eventually, the Chieftains wore through the Blue Devils’ back line and it was none other than sophomore Mia Marques who punched it home, giving them a 1-0 lead with just the fourth quarter to go.
Marques has been making big-time plays all season. She has the second-most points in the North Shore, via Salem News, and she picked up her 15th goal of the season.
Despite the score being close for most of the game, the ball was more in Blue Devil territory thanks to outstanding play to the midfielders, particularly junior Genevive Clapp, who was always around the ball.
Sophomore goalie Sabrina Cafarelli had another shutout in net, adding to her fantastic season and helping Masco advance to the next round.
With under a minute to go, junior Olivia Tsoukalas put the dagger in the heart of the Blue Devils with an insurance goal, sending them on a long and sad journey home.
With the win, Masco takes on the winner of Somerset Berkley (2) vs Wayland (31) who play at 3:30 this afternoon. If Wayland can pull off the upset, Masco will get the home-field advantage once again, but if Somerset Berkley continues to roll like they have been all season, Masco will take the ride up as underdogs and will go to battle.
